If you’re thinking about booking a music lesson, you might be wondering:
- Do I need to be good?
- Is the trial lesson an audition?
- What if I’m nervous or rusty?
- Will the teacher judge me?
I get these questions a lot — so let’s clear a few things up and help you feel more at ease. 😊
Who Do I Teach?
I specialise in working with students aged 18 and over, including:
- University students
- Adult learners
- Teenagers aged 16+ who are preparing for higher grades or returning to music
- Adults of all levels who are curious, motivated, or just want to play for enjoyment
I currently no longer have spaces for younger children, but I do love supporting parents in finding the right teacher for their child — and I’ll share tips on that below.
Do You Need to Be “Good”?
Nope!
In fact, if you’re already brilliantly perfect, you probably don’t need lessons with me. 😉
What you do need is an interest in the piano, flute, or any of the skills that go hand-in-hand with learning an instrument — like:
- Technique
- Confidence
- Performance skills
- Practice structure
- Motivation
- Mindset and goal setting
- Exam success
You don’t need to impress me. You don’t need to be fast, fluent, or flawless.
You just need to be interested.
That’s enough to start.
Is the Trial Lesson an Audition?
Absolutely not.
The trial lesson is not a test. It’s simply a relaxed session for us to get to know each other. A one-to-one lesson is always bespoke, and the trial helps us both decide if we’d be a good fit.
During the trial, you’re welcome to:
- Play something you enjoy
- Share something you find challenging
- Tell me about your goals, worries or musical journey so far
You don’t need to perform. You don’t need to be nervous. In fact, you can even bring questions instead of pieces. It’s your lesson.
A Note to Parents
Although I don’t currently take on new children for lessons, I encourage all parents to interview potential teachers before committing to ongoing tuition.
If a teacher doesn’t offer a trial lesson — ask for one.
And make the most of it by sharing your hopes and dreams for your child. For example:
- Are you hoping they’ll simply enjoy music?
- Do you want them to progress through grades?
- Is the goal to build strong technique, perform, or take exams?
- Would you love them to grow in confidence or enjoy music as a life skill?
Sharing these goals at the start will help your teacher support your child in a focused and positive way.
Why Work with Me?
Because I don’t just teach notes — I help people fall in love with music.
Together, we’ll work at your pace, towards your goals, and build both your skills and your confidence.
Many of my students say that lessons with me feel like a calm, encouraging space — where you’re allowed to learn, explore, and grow, without pressure or judgment.
